Write It Out®
Expressive Writing Workshop

Cape Cod, Massachusetts

Monday August 19 - Wednesday August 21, 2019

“More than Fish”

What: This small expressive writing workshop is for individuals who desire to express life-altering experiences through writing. The workshop incorporates the sensory experiences gathered on the Cape with techniques of expressive writing that enhances all genres of fiction and memoir writing as well as personal essays and creative journaling. Expressive writing is encouraged by the medical and psychological profession as a method to release trauma and restore wellness. Simple yet powerful exercises from the Write It Out program have helped thousands of writers discover insights, connections and understanding that is valuable for their own personal growth. Suggestions for publishing are offered. Early evening salons provide entertainment and an opportunity to share creative work. Private appointments are scheduled for editorial consultations.

The workshop begins on the morning of the first day. The mornings are devoted to Write It Out expressive writing and sometimes expressive art exercises. The afternoons are free for individual work and private appointments. Pre-dinner salons each evening are a time to share work. The workshop ends on the morning of the last day.

Where: Wellfleet-By-The-Sea, a New England village of fishing boats and art galleries, is the Cape Cod background for the workshop. The Holden Inn on Commercial Street, once a sea captain’s home is where the workshop is held. Clean and simple rooms at the Inn help to transport one back to the mid twentieth century when a visit to the sea meant sun, sand and fresh fish to eat from the source just beyond the shore. "The feel of the crispness of fall in the air mixed with the warmth of sun in late August has drawn me here for decades," ("Cape Cod: In Wellfleet MA, Get Your Fill Of Oysters And Art", Ronni Miller, Style Magazine, Sarasota Herald Tribune). Tables and chairs on the lawns of the Inn that overlook Cape Cod Bay and screened and unscreened porches with rocking chairs offer a nostalgic sense of a seashore home to nudge the imagination and write.

From the Inn it’s a short stroll past the protected harbor for fishing and sailboats and the Bay beach where Wellfleet oysters are farmed. Take pad and pen and record the sight of the oyster farmers who row out to their plots from pick-up trucks parked on the beach at low tide. The Atlantic Ocean beaches and famed dunes are dramatic places for sensory experiences to write about and are only a short car drive or bike ride away. Provincetown, a center of literary, artistic and American colonial history at the tip of the Cape, is a half hour drive away with it’s small airport, ferry to Boston, fishing ships, daily whaling trips, boutiques, galleries, and restaurants.

Suggested accommodations are at The Holden Inn 140 Commercial Street, Wellfleet, MA. 508-349-3450. (www.theholdeninn.com, e-mail: striper@gis.net).

Who: Ronni Miller, Founder and Director of the Write It Out program, Book Midwife and award winning fiction author is the facilitator. Her guidance has helped individuals cope with cancer and other life altering traumas in health and personal life through writing. Her clients and students as a result of her work have experienced self-confidence, self-esteem and inner strength and happiness. Dr. James W. Pennebaker, Ph.D, known internationally for his research work in expressive writing for healing has endorsed her work in the field as well as her book Cocoon To Butterfly - A Metamorphosis of Personal Growth Through Expressive Writing. Her specialty as Book Midwife is in memoir and fiction books. She has a BA degree in English from Boston University, did graduate work at Bread Loaf School of English at Middlebury College, and has studied fiction with Arturo Vivante, Francine Prose, and James Magnuson. She has published numerous articles, short stories, poems, and seven books, and her children’s plays have been produced by schools. She has experiences as newspaper and magazine editor, copywriter, journalist and public relations director and is a student of Jungian psychology. She brings her experiences, education, interests and sensitivity to her client and students.

She has said, "My love affair with the area was initiated when I stood high above the Atlantic Ocean at the edge of a dune on a moonless night with explosions of waves that erupted below me. Because of that defining moment, I’ve facilitated writing workshops here for many years to provide students the opportunity to write about sensory experiences of rugged beauty cradled in fishing and seafaring history. Wellfleet is also the setting for several of my published short stories, travel articles and performance theater pieces. The taste of lobster, Wellfleet oysters, clams and smell of salt water combined with the sound of the surf on this rugged Atlantic coast is reason enough to imagine, document and write."
